NB: THE MILL OF BENHOLM TEAROOM IS OPEN 50 WEEKS IN THE YEAR

THE TEAROOM IS CURRENTLY ON A WINTER TIMETABLE

which is that WE ARE OPEN MON to FRI 10am to 2pm

MARCH: Mill of Benholm Science Fair 2012. Practical, fun and free science and engineering activities and demonstrations for all from 10am to 2pm on the 10th and the 17th.

On both Saturdays:

  • Explore the Mill-grounds and the working water-powered Oatmeal Mill. Make a Mini Mill-wheel and learn about cogs, siphons, pumps and pulleys.
  • Take on the Mill of Benholm Challenge: explore the Mill while you do a quiz about the science and technology of the site (one for children, one for adults).
  • Discover light, colour and shadows at the Light Show and try our homemade camera obscura.
  • Explore sound while you make some simple musical instruments from scratch, from shakers to simple Bagpipes.
  • Take a closer look at a soap bubble, melting ice, and a range of objects under microscopes.
  • Make a sundial, a piece of chromatography Art, a compass, a spectrometer or a plaster cast.
  • Learn about looms and have a go at weaving on a simple heddle-loom.

Also on Saturday 10th:

  • Get up close to some vintage tractors to find out how they work.
  • Find out about good nutrition and the digestive system from a professional Nutritionist.

Also on Saturday 17th:

  • Take part in Streamkeeper's and do things such as make water filters, discover what's living in the pond and stream, find out about water pressure, and measure the E-coli levels in the Benholm water.
  • Find out more about bicycles at the Bicycle Workshop.

This event is being held as part of National Science and Engineering Week which is funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and led by the British Science Association.
